Camphill School Hermanus
We are a multi-cultural private residential and day school for children and adolescents in need of special care, accepting all denominations. We are one of the only few facilities in the area, public or private, providing boarding and education for special needs children between the ages of five and twenty. Children with Downs Syndrome, brain injuries, epilepsy, autism, emotional disturbances, learning difficulties and traumatised lives benefit from being here. The residential children live in one of our four unique houses and the day pupils are bussed in from the local area daily. Most of the children from previously disadvantaged backgrounds receive bursaries from our Child Sponsorship Funds as their parents are only able to contribute small amounts towards the monthly school fees. Yet it is vital that all children receive an education enabling them to fulfil their potential and become as independent as possible.
As a welfare organisation we receive no government funding whatsoever. While the parents are very supportive it is not possible for them to bear the full cost of operating the school and therefore we rely on donations which we must raise ourselves. We also have to fund raise for any capital expenditure, i.e. renovations, new buildings, etc. The school is run by groups of people who share in decision making and liaise with the Board. Most of our staff work as residential volunteers who do everything from domestic tasks, to house-parenting, teaching and administration. We also employ a few teachers, office and maintenance staff from the local community.
Camphill School is a welfare and non-profit organisation. We are registered as a company with a Board of Directors consisting of school and farm members, parents and interested outside parties who meet every two months. The company qualifies as an educational fund under Section 18A of the Income Tax Act, so that donations are tax deductible. The school is exempt from income tax payments.
