Volunteering in South Africa Camphill Hermanus

Nestling in the beautiful mountains of the Hemel en Aarde Valley near Hermanus in the Western Cape, South Africa, lies Camphill School and Farm Community - a place of compassion and care.

Camphill was conceived as a haven for children and adults with disabilities: a place they can call home. The philosophy behind the idea was to create a balanced lifestyle involving meaningful work and recreation; and also placing emphasis on the cultural, spiritual and social aspects which are central to human life.

At Camphill Hemel-en-Aarde Hermanus, residents can experience a home life, receive high quality education based on the Waldorf curriculum, develop work skills and share in the social, cultural and spiritual activities of the community with dignity and joy.

"I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended."
